Library presents - A Portrait of Life in Iraq

Wilsonville Library presents
Night of a Thousand Stars: A Portrait of Life in Iraq

Free discussion about war, media bias, and American perceptions of Iraqis and middle easterners.

WILSONVILLE, Ore --- What would a comprehensive portrait of Iraqi society look like before and after the U.S. invasion in 2003, as seen from the perspectives of both Iraqis and U.S. soldiers?

This is the focus of “Night of a Thousand Stars: A Portrait of Life in Iraq,” a free conversation with photojournalist Joel Preston Smith on Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2009 at 6:30 p.m. at the Wilsonville Library, 8200 SW Wilsonville Road, Wilsonville. This program is hosted by the Wilsonville Library and sponsored by Oregon Humanities (formerly Oregon Council for the Humanities).

Mandatory closures at many state offices Friday

If you have business to do with one of Oregon's many state agencies, you might want to try to get it done Thursday.

That's because Friday is the first of 10 state furlough days.

The state anticipates it will save around $2 million to $2.5 million each day - just in payroll - with this move to require unpaid time off.

It's the first of 10 closure days scheduled over the next two years. That means you will not find anyone at the DMV, employment offices, human services ... not even anyone doing testing at the DEQ.

But not all workers are off. State police and corrections officers are working, as are state courts, highway hazard crew and anyone critical to safety. Those workers will have to take an unpaid day off later, or take a pay cut.
